Danny Healy-Rae Slams Green Policies, Warns of Transport Protest

Danny Healy-Rae Slams Green Policies, Warns of Transport Protest

Danny Healy-Rae criticised the minister's greenhouse gas measures as ineffective and said they impose unfair taxes on people and farmers. He defended turf and timber sellers, accused environmentalists and some media including RTE of unfair blame, and warned the transport industry would protest outside the gates tomorrow.

View on greenhouse measures

He said the minister's actions "will not even move the global greenhouse gas scale" and called the broader approach a "green nirvana agenda" that is "more fanatical than realistic." He pointed out Ireland accounts for 0.13 of worldwide emissions, arguing domestic measures will have negligible global impact.

Support for farmers and turf sellers

He defended farmers who "produce the highest quality food from fresh grass," saying they are being blamed by environmentalists, some TDs and sections of the media including RTE. He objected to proposals to penalise people for selling turf and timber, citing remarks by a Finnegale TD.

International comparison

He contrasted domestic criticism with a perceived lack of blame on coal producers overseas, naming Romania, China and Colombia as examples of nations not held to account. He urged a consistent approach to emissions rather than singling out local producers.

Danny Healy-Rae — shot from speech: Danny Healy-Rae Slams Green Policies, Warns of Transport Protest (23.11.2021)

Warning of protest and public response

He warned that the transport industry would demonstrate outside the gates the following day, saying the protest would signal public anger at policies that, in his view, are "brigadiering the people." He framed the protest as the start of letting the government know the impact of its measures.

What you're doing here, Minister of Ireland, will not even move the global greenhouse gas scale, it will not even move the scale. Yet our people are being taxed out of existence and being targeted financially because of a green nirvana agenda that is more fanatical than realistic. Our country is a small island country, 0.13 of all the worldwide emissions, that's all we're producing. Yet our farmers who produce the highest quality food from fresh grass are being blamed by the environmentalists, TDs inside here and indeed the media including RTE, they're blaming the transport sector. Yet no blame to coal producers in Romania, China and Colombia. Stop also burning turf and timber and one Finnegale TD here saying that people should be penalised for selling turf and timber. We're all under the one sky, remember that, Minister, but he don't realise it and he's trying to paralise the people that are working. And sadly but gladly the transport industry are coming up outside the gates here tomorrow and that will be the start of letting you know what you're doing because you're brigadiering the people. Thank you.
