Danny Healy-Rae warns of fertiliser crisis for farmers

Danny Healy-Rae warns of fertiliser crisis for farmers

Danny Healy-Rae spoke about mounting fears among farmers over fertiliser availability and sharply higher prices, asking whether fertiliser will be available after Christmas at a reasonable cost. He said farmers feel isolated and demonised and warned the situation could "break every farmer in the country."

Fertiliser availability and costs

He highlighted that quoted fertiliser prices are now double what they were last August and said a presentation that morning indicated actual availability of fertiliser next spring is in doubt. He directly asked whether fertiliser can be guaranteed after Christmas at a reasonable cost for farmers in Ireland.

Farmers' feelings and potential impact

He said farmers currently feel very isolated, demonised and like the whole world is down on top of them. He warned of worries about cuts to incomes and livelihoods and said the scenario could lead to a crisis that would break every farmer in the country.

Causes and responsibility

He argued there is no connection between climate change plans and the current fertiliser supply issue, saying the problem is global and gas-related. He noted that at the European Union Council meeting a number of prime ministers referenced challenges in relation to fertiliser supplies.

Supply chain context and comparisons

He placed the fertiliser problem in the wider context of global supply chain issues, citing car manufacturing hit by insufficient chips and referencing an Apple announcement as evidence of production and supply disruptions. He said production targets have been pulled back in other industries and supplies in the coming months will be problematic.

Fischer, at the present time farmers feel very isolated, demonised and like the whole world is down on top of them. Worries about hair reduction, cuts to their incomes and livelihoods and severe new restrictions and regulations coming down the line. Is it by coincidence or design that prices quoted for fertiliser at present are now double what they were last August? At the Tagus presentation this morning the consensus is that the actual availability of fertiliser next spring is in doubt. This scenario could lead to a father crisis, automatic hair reduction and break every farmer in the country. Will you ensure that fertiliser will be available after Christmas at a reasonable cost for the farmers of Ireland? First of all, I think you should, there is no coincidence and I think it is wrong to suggest that there is. I am saying, I trust through the chair saying there is. At least let him start to answer you before you jump down. But the point is there is no connection between climate change plans and proposals and the current issue with supply of fertiliser. Because that is a global issue, it is gas related, as we discussed earlier. At the European Union Council meeting a number of Prime Ministers referenced challenges in relation to fertiliser. Yes, supplies in the coming months are going to be problematic. There are lots of supply chain issues that are manifesting itself. We know car manufacturing, for example, has taken a big hit because of the insufficiency of chips, for example. And that is happening in the real world. Production targets have been pulled back. You see Apple's announcement this morning in respect of some of its endeavours. So these are very real issues on the global supply chain market at the moment that we are going to have to deal with.
