Danny Healy-Rae demands action on fisheries, energy and fertiliser

Danny Healy-Rae demands action on fisheries, energy and fertiliser

Danny Healy-Rae spoke in the Dáil on 3 November 2021 about fisheries access, rising energy costs and the crisis in fertiliser supply. He argued these issues are hurting fishermen, coastal communities, hauliers and farmers and demanded urgent government intervention.

Fisheries and coastal communities

The speaker criticised the Taoiseach for not addressing fisheries and said it is unacceptable that fishermen of Ireland can only fish 15% of Irish waters. He warned the restriction affects not only trollermen and fishermen but whole coastal communities from Mallonhead to Mizzonhead and urged the government to "not take no for an answer".

Energy costs and household impact

He raised concerns about increasing gas and electricity prices and asked what the government intends to do, noting that hauliers and any household with a wage are being squeezed by rising costs. He pressed for assistance and a proper rebate to prevent the country from "grinding to a haul" if costs continue to rise.

Coal sellers and prosecutions

Responding to remarks by another deputy, he criticised calls to prosecute people selling coal, suggesting some sellers may be serving those who cannot afford alternatives. He questioned whether such prosecutions would leave vulnerable people without heat and urged the minister and the Taoiseach to take action to avoid people suffering in their homes.

Fertiliser supply and farming

He described the fertiliser situation as "very, very serious" and asked what measures will be taken to ensure agriculture can continue. He warned that without fertiliser at a reasonable cost farmers will be unable to keep working and the agricultural community will be severely harmed.

Thank you very much. Yes, I listened to the Taoiseach and he did not mention anything in relation to the fisheries and it looks like that he closed the book on that but it's not acceptable that the fishermen of Ireland can only fish 15% of Irish waters. That's not acceptable and you have to do something about that and you have to take off your coats and don't take no for an answer because this is not only affecting the trollermen and the fishermen, it's affecting the whole coastal communities from Mallonhead to Mizzonhead. He have to do something about that. He said he spoke about energy prices and increasing gas prices. What are he going to do about that? And like Deputy Ordunu says, the hauliers can only go so far and any person with a weed is affected, the costs are going up every day and they can continue and the country will grind to a haul because they can continue in the vein that they are going if they don't get assistance with a proper rebate. In relation to the energy provision, electricity, what is happening about that? We have on the one hand here with Deputy Ordunu saying that we must take on the conglomerates and at the same time he is going after the people selling coal, maybe to people that can't pay for anything else. He was like the director of public prosecutions. He was like the director of public prosecutions up there saying that these people should be prosecuted. What do you want? The people to be perished inside their homes like as if there were living in Iceland? God Almighty Taoiseach, our minister, he must do something about these things. The fertiliser. The fertiliser situation is very, very serious. And like I asked Taoiseach here today, what are we going to do about it to ensure that the agriculture community can continue and that farmers can continue working? Because if we don't have fertiliser at a reasonable cost, the farmers are going to grind their hearts as well. Can I just say the other thing? Deputy Deputy, there will be an opportunity to come in under the questions and answers. I have given you the clarification of time and I am asking please that you do not cut into the time allocated to Deputy Catherine Connolly is the next speaker. I will let you back in Deputy.
