Danny Healy-Rae Urges Action for Struggling Carers, Daycare Closed

Danny Healy-Rae Urges Action for Struggling Carers, Daycare Closed

Danny Healy-Rae addressed the Tanaiste about the plight of carers for people with physical and mental disabilities and demanded urgent help. He highlighted closed day-care centres, lack of respite and the closure of an Alzheimer's facility in Kilgarvin, Rockmount, calling carers 'strangled and torn and worn'.

Issue raised

Danny Healy-Rae told the Tanaiste that carers of people with physical and mental disabilities have no day-care centres or respite. He emphasised elderly parents caring for grown-up children and carers of people with Alzheimer's as particularly affected.

Kilgarvin closure

The speaker said, "Our place in Kilgarvin, Rockmount is closed and a wonderful facility caring for people with Alzheimer's." He used the closure as an example of lost community supports for people with dementia.

Carers' condition

He described the situation for carers in stark terms, saying they are "strangled and torn and worn" and have no respite. He added that these carers are under severe strain and lack services to relieve the burden.

Appeal to the Tanaiste

Danny Healy-Rae explicitly asked the Tanaiste to take action, saying, "I'm asking you to do something for these people." The speech framed the request as a call for immediate practical help for exhausted family carers.

Tanaiste, I want to highlight to you the plight of carers of people with physical and mental disabilities. Elderly parents who are caring for their grown-up children, there's no day-care centres, there's no respite. The same for carers of people with Alzheimer's. Our place in Kilgarvin, Rockmount is closed and a wonderful facility caring for people with Alzheimer's. These carers, Tanaiste, are strangled and torn and worn. They have no respite, they have no day-care centres to send these people that are caring for. I'm asking you to do something for these people. They're the worst heat in the community, these carers. Please do something.
