Mattie McGrath demands funding for Clanmel Garda Station
Mattie McGrath called for immediate funding and for builders to begin work on the long-delayed Clanmel Garda Station, arguing the current facility is unfit for Garda and the public. He warned Clanmel must not be removed from the private-public partnership package that also included Sligo and demanded the funding stream be announced.
Urgent funding demand
Mattie McGrath pressed for a funding announcement so builders can go on site at Clanmel Garda Station. He said a proper station is needed for Superintendent Willie Leahy, the former Superintendent John Courtney and the Garda serving the town, and insisted the project must be progressed without further delay.
Private-public partnership at risk
McGrath highlighted that Sligo and Clanmel were part of a PPP package and noted Sligo has advanced while Clanmel still waits. He argued Clanmel cannot be allowed to fall off the private-public partnership and called for the funding stream tied to that package to be protected.
Station condition and local impact
He described the existing station as decades-old and "not fit for purpose," saying the issue has been raised in the House for some 60 years. He referenced visits to other sites such as Kinzean Station to underline local need and the scale of the problem in the biggest inland town in the country.
Responses and follow-up
McGrath thanked staff from the Garda and individuals named in the remarks, and addressed the Tanaiste about the issue in the Chamber. A ministerial reply in the record said there was no up-to-date briefing at that moment but that they would make sure to follow up on the matter.

I too, on behalf of the Royal Independence, want to wish all the staff from the Garda Chikana outside, right through the house here, Peter Finnegan down and yourself and the Cancola for all your forbearance. It wasn't easy. Tanaiste, Clanmel Garda Station is still languishing, waiting. We have a lovely site and we have planning commission and a wonderful design. I saw during the week where another deputy raised was Sligo. Sligo and Clanmel were on a package, a PPP package. Sligo has fought and offered. We cannot allow Clanmel Garda Station to fall off this private-public partnership because we need to get a proper station for Superintendent Willie Leahy and the former Superintendent John Courtney and all the excellent Garda, the biggest inland town in the country and such as the Kinzean Station, I believe you visited it, I think you did anyway, and it's just so bad in need. It's been raised here for 60 years. That's how bad long it is. It's not fit for purpose. It's expected Garda or for the public to work there.
