Mattie McGrath Urges Action on Clonmel Garda Station Plans
Mattie McGrath asked the Tánaiste about the stalled plans for a new Clonmel Garda Station at the old Kickham Barracks site and urged immediate movement on construction. He said the Gardaí and the public deserve proper facilities after decades of promises and praised local officers for their work during COVID.
Immediate concern
McGrath noted that the plans and designs for the new Clonmel Garda Station are on public display and that a site in the old Kickham Barracks has been identified, but no construction has begun.
Local policing praised
He commended Superintendent Willie Lachey, Sergeant Ciarán O'Regan and the community team for excelling during COVID and for their ongoing work with the community.
Long delay and demand for action
McGrath stressed that the issue has been ongoing for 60 years, criticised repeated unfulfilled promises and demanded that the site be turned and machines put on site so a proper station - fit for purpose - can be delivered.
Response from the Tánaiste
The Tánaiste acknowledged the raise by McGrath, said she did not have a start date for the project and undertook to inform the minister and try to secure an answer as soon as possible. The Tánaiste also noted the matter had been raised previously by Senator Garter and Deputy Cahill.

We now have a site in the old Kickham Barracks, a fine site and ideally located and the plans are fitted in neatly. When or where are we going to get a proper gather station fit for purpose? So the Superintendent Willie Lachey and Sergeant Ciarán O'Regan there and his community team have excelled during COVID and the work they're doing with the community. When are we going to get some movement? Because this is going on with 60 years. The plans, with the site, are needed to go ahead. And the go ahead I mean by a site being turned and machines on site because we've got so many promises and so many false stones. The Gardaí deserve to have proper facilities. The public do also but it's just the Kendi and it must be righted. Thanks very much. Thanks very much Deputy for raising this issue of Clonmel Garda Station. You've been raising me a few times both by you and also by Senator Garter and Deputy Cahill. I don't have a date for the beginning of that project but I will certainly let Minister McEntee know that you raised it here this morning and we'll try and get you an answer as soon as possible.
