Richard Boyd Barrett praises Ceann Comhairle, urges question reform
Richard Boyd Barrett spoke in the Dáil, congratulating the Ceann Comhairle on re-election and commending recent parliamentary reforms. He commiserated with Deputy Nocton, endorsed suggestions to improve parliamentary questions and urged that the rights of all members be considered.
Re-election and commendation
The Ceann Comhairle was congratulated on re-election and praised for being fair, accessible and reforming. Boyd Barrett highlighted the Business Committee and the Dáil Reform Committee as successes in widening participation and helping set the Dáil agenda.
Parliamentary question reform
He commiserated with Deputy Nocton and said Deputy Nocton made useful suggestions, citing parliamentary questions on health that are bounced between departments and the HSC and take a long time to be answered. Boyd Barrett said those suggestions should be taken seriously to improve responsiveness on parliamentary questions.
Rights of all members
He stressed the importance of always considering the rights of all members, particularly those not in groups, and described that appeal as an important point for the Dáil's work and inclusivity.
Responsibility to the public and outlook
He described the role of being in the Dáil as a privilege and emphasised the responsibility to the people who elected them. Boyd Barrett expressed confidence that the Ceann Comhairle would facilitate efforts to advance a fairer society and said he hoped the Dáil could build on recent reforms.

Ceann Comhairle, can I offer you my congratulations and our congratulations on your re-election as Ceann Comhairle and commiserations to Deputy Nocton and while Deputy Nocton failed to be elected I do think he made some very good suggestions in his speech which I think we should consider seriously I think there's many of us share the frustration about parliamentary questions of some parliamentary questions he mentioned health as an example where they get battered around from departments to HSC and take a long time to come back and I think he made some very very useful suggestions in that regard that we should seriously seriously consider and I think his appeal for us to always consider the rights of all members and all members and maybe particularly those who aren't in groups and so on are very important points to make I also want to commend you Ceann Comhairle and your last four years as a very fair and accessible and reforming Ceann Comhairle I think the Business Committee was a particular success in getting everybody to be involved in setting the agenda of the Dáil and I have to say you are always very fair and accommodating in trying to ensure that all suggestions as much as were possible for items on the agenda were put on and I think that has made this stall a more relevant place and a more accessible place where not just TDs can make suggestions but where we can be the vehicle through which groups in society of particular issues that they want to raise in here and have debated in here have been able to get those issues on the agenda and I think it's terribly important to we continue to do that and I commend you for facilitating that both in the Business Committee and in the Dáil Reform Committee so congratulations to you Count Corle I have no doubt it's a privilege for all of us to be in here for those who've been elected for the first time for those of us who've been re-elected the responsibility that we owe to the people who've put us in here to make sure that we give real effect to their wishes to their aspirations for a better for a fairer society but I'm confident Count Corle that you will facilitate us in trying to achieve that and hopefully we can take things better and further in the coming Dáil period Thank you Deputy Boyd Barrett
