Mattie McGrath: Tipperary Misses Out on New Gardaí Recruits
Mattie McGrath criticised the allocation of 200 new Gardaí recruits, saying none are being assigned to his Tipperary district. He warned that Clonmel, Carrick and Shure are being left exposed and that local Gardaí lack necessary backup.

Mattie McGrath noted that 200 new Gardaí recruits are due to come out tomorrow from Templemore, but he said none have been allocated to the Clonmel, Carrick and Shure district despite local appeals.

He described the situation as shocking and shameful for the biggest inland town in the country and district, saying the Superintendent and his team are in a dangerous position because they do not have backup.
Calls to the Commissioner
McGrath pointed out that the Commissioner determines where recruits are deployed and appealed for at least 10 officers to be assigned to his area after repeated pleas from local representatives and the JPC.

The whole country are delighted that there are 200 new Gardaí recruits coming out tomorrow from Timplemore, but we're in shock in Tipperary. The Commissioner was down recently, he listened to the JPC and all the Ruxus members, and so as Minister of Planning is aware, and you're partly aware of it, we're in a perilous situation in the Clonmel, Carrick and Shure district as regards Gardaí. We expect that we get at least 10 after all our pleas, and we're not getting a single one in that district. It's just shocking that the people of Carrick and Shure and Clonmel can be neglected in this way, and the President Gardaí, Superintendent, really that he and his team, and the Gardaí are in a dangerous situation because they don't have backup. It's shocking. The biggest Inland town in the country and district, it's shameful. Everybody could make a case, I know it's a matter for the Commissioner. But it is welcome that we're seeing increasing numbers of Gardaí Siocona. Where they go has to be determined by where the policing need is most, and it's the Gardaí Commissioner who determines that.
