Victor Boyhan urges debate on national housing plan

Victor Boyhan urges debate on national housing plan

Victor Boyhan called for a debate on delivering homes and building communities, urging detailed scrutiny of the new government's national plan on housing. He said the plan should not be rushed and asked that substantial parliamentary time be set aside so the details can be examined over the next few days.

Call for parliamentary debate

Boyhan asked colleagues to allocate substantial time in the house to drill down into the plan's detail, arguing senators are full-time and can make more time for what he described as one of the most important issues.

Past national housing plans

He highlighted that there have been four national housing plans in the last 12 years and said that record must be set in context when assessing the new plan and who was in power during that period.

Commendation of Citizens Information

Boyhan commended Citizens Information and the bureaux around the country, stressing their people-centred, empowering, trustworthy, independent and accessible work and the importance of their volunteer networks.

Firstly I'd like to call for a debate on delivering homes, building communities, the new government's national plan on housing. I think it's important that we don't rush to any judgment, that we see the detail of it, we drill down to which it'll take some considerable time to look at it over the next few days, but I think it is important and we have to set it in the context. There are four in the last 12 years, there's been four national housing plans and I don't need to point out to all of us who are politicians in here who was in power for all that period of time, but as I say I want to look at it, tease it out, I think we should have a very substantial amount of time set aside in this house. I mean we are full-time senators here, we have time and we can make more time. This is one of the most important issues so I'd ask that that would happen and finally I would like to commend the citizens of the information. Minister Dari Cleary of course launched a strategic plan for 2025 to 2027 and I think we all know of the importance work of citizens information and the bureaus around the country and we know that key to their work is that they're people centred, they're empowering, they're trustworthy, they're independent and importantly they're accessible. Clearly this strategy will require a rollout of finances and supports to get it through. The Minister acknowledged that, he's an exceptionally committed Minister, he's particularly interested in all of this. It was launched in Buswell yesterday, I want to commend him for his ongoing support to the organisation and the many volunteers who work in this network across the country, but I think it's important that commencing with this is that the necessary resources are put in place and I just want to acknowledge the work and the commitment of the Minister and of the Citizens Information Bureau and well done and I wish them well with a strategic plan for 2025 to 2027. Thank you.
