Richard Boyd Barrett: Condemns Putin, Calls Out NATO Powers

Richard Boyd Barrett: Condemns Putin, Calls Out NATO Powers

Richard Boyd Barrett condemned the Putin regime's invasion of Ukraine as "an absolutely brutal, unjustified criminal action" and said Putin should withdraw. He argued that NATO-dominant powers — the United States, Germany and the UK — are unreliable allies and criticised what he described as their double standards.

Condemnation of the invasion

Richard Boyd Barrett described the invasion of Ukraine as brutal and criminal and affirmed that the Ukrainian people have an absolute right to resist occupation and defend international law.

Critique of NATO-dominant powers

He said the powers that dominate NATO are not reliable or primarily motivated to support people resisting occupation, arguing that their interventions reveal imperialist character and double standards.

Allegation about US demands for Ukrainian minerals

He cited recent statements attributed to the Trump administration, saying it has signalled that US support for Ukraine comes at the price of allowing the extraction of hundreds of millions worth of precious minerals from Ukraine.

Double standards over Palestine

He accused the same NATO-dominant powers of simultaneously arming a power accused of committing a genocidal massacre against the people of Palestine and of supporting an apartheid, brutal regime and illegal occupation.

Call for Ireland to take a consistent stance

Richard Boyd Barrett urged Ireland to stand consistently against all occupiers, perpetrators of genocide and breakers of international law, and to stand with the occupied and the oppressed whether in Ukraine or in Palestine.

The Putin regime's invasion of Ukraine was an absolutely brutal, unjustified criminal action and he should get out. Putin should get out of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have the absolute right to resist that brutal invasion and that brutal occupation. But the people, particularly the powers that dominate NATO, the United States, Germany and the UK, are not reliable allies in supporting people who are resisting occupation and oppression. And they are not motivated, indeed, by a desire to support people who are resisting occupation or who are trying to defend principles of international law. And that is the key point. I think the Ukrainian people have discovered that to their cost since Trump came into power, where Trump is now saying that the price of gaining support from the United States is that the Trump administration want to loot hundreds of millions worth of precious minerals from Ukraine. Exposing the imperialist character of their intervention in all of this. And it is a mistake, in my opinion, for Ukraine to align themselves with powers that are that cynical and are that middled with double standards. And the double standard is most apparent when you think that the US, the UK, Germany and so on are simultaneously arming a power that has been guilty of a genocidal massacre against the people of Palestine and continue to support that apartheid, brutal regime, illegal occupation, the brutal persecution and oppression of the people of Palestine. So, Ireland must stand consistently against all occupiers, all perpetrators of genocide, breakers of international law, and we should not align with the double standards of the powers that dominate NATO. We want to consistently stand with the occupied and the oppressed, whether they are in Ukraine or whether they are in Palestine.
