Mattie McGrath urges urgent investment in Waterford-Limerick rail

Mattie McGrath urges urgent investment in Waterford-Limerick rail

Mattie McGrath criticised the Waterford to Limerick rail service for closed stations, limited services, no ticketing at many stops and poor promotion. He urged urgent investment, more trains and station upgrades, praised staff at Limerick Junction and Thornless, and invited the minister to visit the line.

Main demand

He called for huge investment in the Waterford to Limerick line, calling it a strategic line for the southeast. He said upgrades are needed so trains can run faster, services can increase and the line can be properly promoted so people know trains run from Carrick and Sure and other towns.

Service and station problems

He described stations being locked, passengers unable to buy tickets at many stops and a timetable with only a small number of services each day. He said it is not good enough that people arrive after a long journey and find no facilities or open stations to use.

Praise for staff

He saluted the drivers, office staff, floor staff and ground staff at Limerick Junction and Thornless, calling them exceptional and acknowledging their work despite the shortcomings of the service.

Request to the minister

He complimented the minister on the appointment and said he looks forward to engaging fully. He invited the minister to visit the line to see conditions for himself and urged attention to local needs.

Local impact and next steps

He highlighted the importance of the line to towns mentioned in his remarks, including Clonmel and Tipperary town as well as Waterford and Limerick, and said current limited services inconvenience travellers. He pressed for practical steps - more trains, open and functional stations, and active marketing of the route - to address the problems he raised.
