Taoiseach, this day last week I stood up and asked for an urgent debate before the
situation at Garvahie Road had escalated on behalf of the residents who I'd met
the previous day in Garvahie Road about the situation in Drumcree that was
looming. That request for an urgent debate was just completely ignored and
the residents particularly asked me to ask the government about its
responsibility under the Good Friday Agreement and the British government's
responsibility to make sure communities are free from sectarian intimidation and
that was ignored and we saw the escalation last week and that is still
not resolved. The Irish government and the British government have a
responsibility to make sure that that community is not traumatized and dragged
back to the days of sectarian violence and conflict. Can we have an urgent
discussion to make sure this government and this Oireachtas discharge its
responsibility in that regard?
I want to thank the opposition for the request. So in relation to the
situation in Drumcree in the north we all understand how sensitive a time
this is. The Taoiseach has addressed it there under leaders questions looking
for a pathway forward and I think it's important that efforts involving the
Minister for Foreign Affairs, the UK Secretary of State and importantly the
communities are allowed to continue. In relation to requests for statements in
relation to CHI they will be scheduled in the next couple of weeks and
I've heard the other requests but Lhaskan Corle we have significant business to get
through this week as the budget is next week so the order of business stands.
