Richard Boyd Barrett: Call for Revolt on Cost of Living

Richard Boyd Barrett: Call for Revolt on Cost of Living

Richard Boyd Barrett addressed a march ahead of the upcoming budget to demand urgent action on the cost of living and housing. He urged support for workers balloting for industrial action and accused the government of favouring wealthy interests like data centre owners and billionaires.

Summary of the address

Richard Boyd Barrett set out why the budget must prioritise ordinary working people. He said energy price hikes, rising accommodation costs and childcare are hammering households and called for a revolt on the cost of living and the cost of housing.

Support for workers and industrial action

He stated he is fully behind workers who are balloting for industrial action to secure decent pay increases and argued workers generally need to fight back to force change. The speech frames industrial ballots as a necessary response to falling living standards.

Criticism of government priorities

Boyd Barrett accused the government of protecting the wealthy, data centre owners and billionaires rather than the majority. He argued the coming budget must deliver real measures to help with energy costs, housing and childcare.

Budget demands and consequences

The address positions the march and workplace organising as a lead-up to pressure on the budget. It warns that without clear action from ministers, ordinary working people will continue to suffer and calls for tangible measures to reduce the cost of living and housing.

So we're only a couple of weeks away from the budget and we're out here marching saying we need a revolt on the cost of living, on the cost of housing, ordinary working people have been hammered with the energy price hikes, with the cost of accommodation and childcare and we need to fight back. So we're 100% behind the workers who are balloting for industrial action to demand decent pay increases and we need workers generally now to fight back because this government is only looking after the rich, the data centre owners, the billionaires and we need to demand that ordinary working people get something from this budget and get real action to help with the cost of living and the cost of housing.
