James Browne: Tackling Housing Affordability After Record Social Builds
James Browne outlines his party's recent record delivery of social houses and sets out why affordability remains his top priority. He reviews measures already in place and reiterates a commitment to make homes more affordable for people across the country.
Record social housing delivery
James Browne points to a record number of social houses delivered last year in the States and says he expects to beat that again this year. He frames that delivery as a foundation for addressing the wider affordability challenge facing families.
Affordability as the primary concern
Browne is explicit that affordability is a very key issue and a number one priority for him. He explains that this concern was central to recent Parliamentary Party discussions and to his own working agenda.
Existing support measures
The address lists specific schemes already in place to help people access homes, including the Help to Buy scheme, the First Home scheme and vacant property grants. Browne presents these measures as part of an ongoing effort to reduce barriers to homeownership and rental affordability.
Next steps and ongoing commitment
Browne signals continued work to explore further options to make homes more affordable and frames future delivery of social housing as part of that strategy. He commits to keeping affordability at the centre of policy decisions going forward.

One of the key issues that did come across in the Parliamentary Party meeting, obviously last year we delivered a record number of social houses in the history of the States. I believe we will beat that again this year. But affordability is a very key issue, something I'm very much conscious of and it's something we are working on to see how can we make homes more affordable. Obviously we've taken some significant measures already. We have the Help to Buy scheme, the First Home scheme, the vacant property grants, but I think obviously challenging that affordability challenge for people across the country is a number one priority for myself.
