Richard Boyd Barrett: Government Betrays Pensioners on May Day

Richard Boyd Barrett: Government Betrays Pensioners on May Day

Richard Boyd Barrett accuses the government of betraying hundreds of thousands of pensioners after it refused to issue the money message for the Retired Workers Bill on May Day. He confronted the Taoiseach in the House, condemning a move he says denied pensioners a say on cuts that followed austerity.

What happened: Richard Boyd Barrett says the government refused to issue the money message for the Retired Workers Bill on May Day, preventing the measure from progressing despite its passage at second stage. He calls the timing and the decision a direct affront to pensioners and to parliamentary democracy.

Legislative status: The Retired Workers Bill had passed second stage and undergone pre-legislative scrutiny, according to Boyd Barrett. The bill was designed to give pensioners a voice on the reductions to their pensions imposed during austerity and to restore some democratic oversight.

Reaction and significance: Boyd Barrett describes pensioners as furious and labels the government action a disgrace. He frames the refusal to issue the money message as both a policy betrayal of retired workers and a procedural subversion of this House.

Implications: The speech sets out a political challenge for the government over pension policy and parliamentary process. Boyd Barrett urges attention to the long-term effects of austerity on pensioners and the need for democratic remedies through the Retired Workers Bill.

Taoiseach, on May Day, International Workers Day of all days, this government betrayed hundreds of thousands of pensioners in this country and sabotaged the democracy of this House by refusing to issue the money message for the Retired Workers Bill which had passed second stage, passed pre-legislative scrutiny and which would give pensioners the right to have a say over the fact that their pensions were slashed and never have recovered from the austerity cuts to pensioners and they campaigned for this and the government announced this on Friday of all days. It's a disgrace. Those pensioners are furious.
