Rose Conway-Walsh: Scheme Not Fit - 100% Redress Now
Rose Conway-Walsh criticises the scheme addressing defective concrete blocks, calling it "not fit for purpose" and demanding 100% redress. She warns the gap between the grant and rebuild costs makes the scheme unaffordable for many, particularly in Mayo.
Rose Conway-Walsh tells the Minister the current scheme fails homeowners, arguing the gap between grant payments and actual rebuild costs leaves many unable to restore their homes. She says the scheme is unaffordable for too many people and demands full redress.
The speaker highlights the particular pressure on families in her own county in Mayo, where rebuild costs outstrip the supports on offer. She warns homeowners not to rebuild without replacing foundations after concrete testing.
Conway-Walsh brands the defective concrete blocks as "one of the greatest scandals ever" and urges a public inquiry to run in parallel with rebuilding work, pressing for clarity and accountability.
She notes testing delays and tells homeowners to be cautious: do not rebuild your home without replacing your foundations. The address focuses on the human and financial consequences of the scheme and the need for urgent government action.

Minister, this scheme is not fit for purpose. We need 100% redress. It's unaffordable for too many people, particularly in my own county in Mayo. The gap is too big between the grant and the rebuild costs. The defective concrete blocks represents one of the greatest scandals ever. We need a public inquiry to run in parallel with getting the homes rebuilt. People have to wait months on end just to get a result of the testing but I would say to people do not rebuild your home without replacing your foundations.
