Brian Stanley: condemns Gaza slaughter, demands block on Israeli bonds
Brian Stanley addressed the ongoing slaughter in Gaza and urged political pressure on Israel, calling for measures to block the sale of Israeli bonds. He criticised the government's refusal to back a proposal to prevent the central bank approving those bond sales and highlighted a contradiction with the central bank governor's statements.
He said the slaughter in Gaza continues this week, with men, women and children mowed down by tank fire and massive aerial bombardments of people queuing for food, and camps where people are trying to shelter after being displaced about 100 times in the last two years.
He criticised last week's decision in which the government refused to back a measure to block the central bank from approving the sale of Israeli bonds. He highlighted that the Minister for Finance claimed his hands were tied and that others had stated the central bank "does not approve, issue or sell or oversee the sale of Israeli bonds."
Brian Stanley cited the central bank governor, Gabriel McClough, who contradicted the minister's account. McClough said the central bank could decline to approve the sale of Israeli bonds if national restrictive measures were put in place, that the decision is with the Dáil, and that the bank could provide a legal basis and would look closely at the matter.
He said the Irish people are very angry and criticised how the matter was handled in the chamber. He also complained about the short format for replies, saying the Taoiseach was not given the opportunity and urging adherence to the minute limit in proceedings.

T-shirt, the slaughter in Gaza continues this week. We still see men, women and children mowed down by tank fire and massive aerial bombardments of people queuing for food, but also camps where people are trying to shelter who have been displaced for about 100 times in the last two years. There is a moral and political responsibility on us to do all we can to put pressure on the terrorist state of Israel. Last week, your government refused to back a measure that would do just that. By refusing to back a proposal to block the central bank from approving the perspective for the sale of Israeli bonds, the Minister for Finance claimed his hands were tied, that the government couldn't intervene with the state bank on the approval of bonds. And you said, you went further, you stated that, and I'm quoting directly from what you said, that the central bank does not approve, issue or sell or oversee the sale of Israeli bonds. But the governor of the central bank has said different, Gabriel McClough. He has now contradicted what you said. Gabriel McClough stated that the central bank could decline to approve the sale of Israeli bonds if national restrictive measures one quarter are put in place. The decision is with the Dáil, and he said we could provide a legal basis to do so. He said that he agreed to look closely at the island, and in his view, the central bank does approve the sale of bonds. The perspective for the sale. The Irish people are very angry. The Irish people are not a back-and-forth. The Irish people are not a back-and-forth. It is not a back-and-forth. The Taoiseach is not given the opportunity, and I think everybody should appreciate that the format of this is a minute, a minute, and stick to it, please.
